The SNP have announced that former Depute Leader of the Council, Councillor Frank Ross has been selected as their nominee for Lord Provost, and it is proposed that he will be installed at this Thursday’s council meeting.
While discussions continue between the SNP and the Labour Group to form a coalition, the SNP with most councillors after the elections earlier this month, have the right to choose the new Lord Provost from among their number.
The Lord Provost becomes the non-political head of the council as well as Lord Lieutenant, HM The Queen’s representative in the capital city.
We understand that he will hand over the keys to the city in a historic ceremony to The Princess Royal later this month as part of his first civic duties.
He will succeed Councillor Donald Wilson who was the Lord Provost during the last administration.
Cllr Ross said: “To be selected as the SNP candidate for Lord Provost is a great honour and privilege. There is no higher civic honour than being asked to represent the Capital of Scotland on a local and worldwide stage.
“I’m determined to ensure that all the diverse elements of civic life have a voice in our Council chamber and I’ll be working to make sure our Council is as inclusive as possible
SNP Group Leader Adam McVey added : “I’m delighted that Frank has agreed to be our candidate for this prestigious office. I know he will represent the City with an enormous amount of distinction and bring boundless energy to the role.
“We need a Lord Provost who will always put our City first and be a leader for all of us regardless of which political party we support, Frank Ross will do just that.”
